NPT fittings are a "pipe thread" fitting, for which the thread design itself provides the sealing. The threads progressively get bigger, and so the threads more or less pinch off (<--hehe) the flow of the fluid. AN fittings have straight threads and rely on a 37 degree beveled surface to seal. For an AN fitting there must be a male and a female fitting, and they have matching beveled surfaces. The threads provide no sealing, the matching beveled surfaces provides the seal. These two types of fittings are completely different and cannot be mixed at all.
